November 21, 2000 The Florida Supreme Court Allows the Election Recount to Continue

This decision was then appealed to the US Supreme Court by the George Bush legal team.  The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, ordered the recount to by stopped – on the legal basis that the Florida courts had no right to intervene in their election.  A short time later, Al Gore conceded the race and George W. Bush was declared the winner of the 2000 Presidential election.

A few months later, a study done by the Miami Herald and USA Today found that even if the Florida recount had continued, Bush still would have been the winner.   The 2008 HBO movie “Recount” depicts the events and people involved in the Florida recount and the legal battle around it.
