November 15, 1936 FDR Places the Cornerstone of the Jefferson Memorial

The dedication ceremony and opening to the public happened 4 years later.  The construction of the memorial was, as most DC monuments, not without controversy (removing cherry blossom trees) or a connection to the Freemasons (John Russell Pope).
